Description

Detective & The Thief is a single-player puzzle-adventure game developed by Silver Lining Studio and published by Another Indie. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2023. The narrative is set in a fictional, rain-soaked metropolis during the early 20th century, a period defined by gaslight and burgeoning forensic science. The story follows two protagonists: a disgraced detective named Arthur and a cunning thief named Violet. The player alternates between these characters across two parallel timelines. Arthur investigates a series of high-profile thefts, while Violet executes the very same crimes. The game’s central mechanic involves the player using information gathered from one character’s perspective to solve puzzles and progress the other’s narrative. The visual style employs a hand-drawn, noir-inspired aesthetic with muted colors and dynamic lighting. The soundtrack is a period-appropriate jazz and orchestral score. The game is structured into chapters, each focusing on a specific heist and its subsequent investigation. The narrative explores themes of justice, morality, and the blurred line between law and crime.

Instructions

The game is controlled via keyboard and mouse or a standard gamepad. Movement for the active character is mapped to the WASD keys or the left analog stick. Interaction with objects, characters, and clues is performed by pressing the E key or the A button on a controller. The inventory screen is accessed by pressing the I key or the Y button. The player must examine environments for interactive elements, which are highlighted with a subtle glow. The core gameplay loop involves two distinct phases. In the Thief phase, the player controls Violet during the night of a crime. The objective is to navigate a location, avoid detection by guards or security systems, and steal a specific target item. Stealth is required; the player must hide in shadows and behind objects using the C key or the B button. A sound meter on the HUD indicates the noise level of the player’s actions. In the Detective phase, the player controls Arthur during the following day. The objective is to examine the same location for evidence, such as footprints, fingerprints, and broken locks. The player must collect these clues and combine them in a deduction menu, accessed by pressing the Tab key or the View button. Correct deductions unlock new dialogue options and reveal the Thief’s next target. The game provides no explicit hints; progression relies entirely on the player’s observational skills and logical reasoning. A journal, opened with the J key or the Select button, records all collected clues and character notes.
