Description

Crystal Diamond is a single-player puzzle video game developed by the independent studio Lattice Interactive and released in 2023 for personal computers and mobile platforms. The game is set within a subterranean crystalline cavern system where the player character, a gem prospector, seeks to recover a legendary artifact known as the Crystal Diamond. The narrative is delivered through environmental storytelling and brief text logs found within the caverns. The game’s visual aesthetic is defined by a low-poly, isometric art style with a muted color palette, punctuated by the bright, refractive glow of the titular diamond and other gemstones. The soundtrack consists of ambient drone music and subtle sound effects of dripping water and shifting rock. The core objective is to navigate a series of interconnected, grid-based chambers, each containing a set of colored crystals. The player must manipulate these crystals to create a path to the exit while avoiding hazards such as collapsing floors and unstable mineral formations. The game features a total of 120 levels, divided into four distinct biomes: the Shale Caverns, the Quartz Tunnels, the Magma Vents, and the Diamond Core. A level editor is included, allowing players to create and share custom puzzles.

Instructions

Gameplay is turn-based and operates on a grid of square tiles. The player character occupies one tile and can move in four cardinal directions (up, down, left, right) using the arrow keys on a keyboard or a directional pad on a controller. On a touchscreen, the player taps an adjacent tile to move. Each move consumes one turn. The primary interaction is with colored crystals. A crystal occupies a single tile and is immobile. When the player character moves onto a tile adjacent to a crystal, the crystal is activated. Activation causes the crystal to emit a beam of light in a straight line in the direction opposite the player’s approach. This beam travels until it hits a wall, another crystal, or the player character. If the beam hits a wall, it creates a temporary bridge over a gap tile for a duration of three turns. If the beam hits another crystal of the same color, both crystals are destroyed, and a permanent bridge is created. If the beam hits a crystal of a different color, both crystals are destroyed, and a temporary bridge is created for one turn. If the beam hits the player character, the player loses a life. The player has three lives per level. Hazards include crumbling tiles, which collapse two turns after being stepped on, and unstable mineral formations, which explode if the player moves within two tiles of them. The game is paused by pressing the Escape key or the Start button. The player can undo the last move by pressing the Z key or the B button, with a limit of three undos per level. The level is completed when the player character reaches the exit tile, marked by a glowing portal.
