Description
Crab Penalty is a single-player arcade simulation game developed by Studio Granchio and released in 2023 for personal computers and select mobile platforms. The game simulates the role of a municipal crustacean control officer in a fictional coastal city where an invasive crab population has disrupted urban infrastructure. The player is tasked with enforcing a strict penalty system against crabs that violate local ordinances, such as crossing roads without a permit, loitering near seafood markets, or obstructing pedestrian walkways. The game world is rendered in a low-polygon, isometric perspective, depicting a vibrant seaside town with distinct districts including a harbor, a boardwalk, and a residential zone. The core loop involves patrolling these areas, identifying offending crabs, and issuing digital citations using a handheld scanner device. The game features a dynamic day-night cycle and weather system that affects crab behavior; for example, crabs are more active during high tide and at dusk. The penalty system is based on a tiered fine structure, with repeat offenders incurring higher penalties and potential escalation to crab detention. The game includes a score multiplier for consecutive correct identifications and a penalty for issuing citations to non-offending creatures, such as seagulls or lobsters. The objective is to achieve a perfect enforcement record across a 30-day in-game period, culminating in a final evaluation of the player’s efficiency and accuracy.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are centered on navigation and target identification. The player controls an avatar using the W, A, S, and D keys for movement across the isometric map. The mouse is used to rotate the camera view by holding the right mouse button and dragging. The primary interaction tool is the citation scanner, activated by left-clicking on a crab. A targeting reticle appears, and the player must hold the left mouse button for two seconds to complete a scan. During the scan, a HUD element displays the crab’s current activity and a list of potential violations. The player must then press the spacebar to confirm a violation or the E key to dismiss the crab as compliant. Incorrect judgments reduce the player’s accuracy score. The game also includes a sprint function, activated by holding the Shift key, which drains a stamina bar. The interface displays a minimap in the top-right corner, showing crab density heat zones. A penalty log on the left side of the screen records all issued citations, including the fine amount and violation type. The player can access a pause menu by pressing the Escape key, which allows for saving the game and adjusting audio settings. The game uses a contextual control scheme; when near a penalty payment kiosk, the player presses the F key to deposit collected fines, which updates the city budget meter. The game ends if the player fails to meet a daily quota of citations or if the city budget meter reaches zero due to excessive incorrect penalties.
