Description
Coastal Defense is a tower defense strategy game developed by a small independent studio and released in 2023 for personal computers and mobile platforms. The game simulates the protection of a coastline from an invading naval force. The player assumes the role of a coastal artillery commander tasked with preventing enemy ships from reaching a designated harbor or beachhead. The setting is a fictionalized modern conflict, with visual aesthetics leaning toward realistic military hardware and terrain. The game features a single-player campaign consisting of 15 levels, each with increasing difficulty and unique geographical layouts such as rocky inlets, river deltas, and open bays. The primary objective in each level is to eliminate all enemy vessels before they land troops or destroy a critical structure. The game employs a top-down perspective with a zoomable camera. Resource management is central to gameplay; the player earns currency by destroying enemy units, which is then spent on purchasing and upgrading defensive structures. Defensive options include fixed artillery batteries, anti-ship missile launchers, naval mines, and air support strikes. Enemy units range from small patrol boats to large battleships and aircraft carriers, each with distinct speed, armor, and weaponry. The game includes a dynamic weather system that affects visibility and projectile accuracy. A scoring system awards medals based on the number of enemy ships sunk, remaining resources, and time taken to complete the level.
Instructions
Gameplay is controlled through a point-and-click interface on personal computers and a touch interface on mobile devices. The player begins each level by selecting a starting location for a command center, which serves as the primary structure. Defensive emplacements are built by clicking or tapping on designated build zones along the coastline. Each structure has a cost in in-game currency, displayed in the build menu. The player can upgrade any structure by selecting it and clicking the upgrade button, which increases its damage, range, or rate of fire. Enemy ships appear from the edges of the map and follow predetermined paths toward the objective. The player can target individual enemy units by clicking or tapping on them, which directs all available defensive fire toward that target. Alternatively, the player can set a priority system for automatic targeting, such as "nearest" or "strongest." The camera is controlled by dragging the mouse or swiping the screen to pan, and by using the scroll wheel or pinch gesture to zoom. A resource counter is displayed in the upper-left corner of the screen. A pause button halts all action, allowing the player to build or upgrade structures without time pressure. The game provides a tutorial level that introduces basic controls and mechanics. A mini-map in the lower-right corner shows the entire battlefield and the positions of all units and structures. The player can also activate special abilities, such as airstrikes or radar scans, by clicking their icons in the toolbar, which have cooldown timers. The game ends when all enemy ships are destroyed or when the command center is destroyed.
