Description
Castle Crusade is a real-time strategy game developed by Ironclad Games and released in 2009 for Microsoft Windows. The game is set in a medieval fantasy world where players assume the role of a lord or lady commanding a fortress. The primary objective is to expand territorial control by constructing defensive structures, training military units, and launching assaults on enemy strongholds. The game features a single-player campaign with a linear narrative, as well as multiplayer modes supporting up to eight players. The visual style employs a top-down isometric perspective with hand-drawn 2D sprites. Resource management is central to gameplay, requiring the collection of gold, stone, and wood to fund construction and unit production. The game includes three distinct factions: the Human Kingdom, the Elven Alliance, and the Orc Horde, each with unique unit types and building trees. Victory conditions vary by map but typically involve eliminating all enemy lords or capturing a set number of control points. The game received moderate critical reception, with praise for its strategic depth and criticism for its lack of innovation in the genre.
Instructions
Gameplay is controlled through a point-and-click interface. The player selects units or buildings by left-clicking on them. A right-click issues movement or attack commands. The camera is navigated using the arrow keys or by moving the mouse cursor to the screen edges. The scroll wheel zooms in and out. The game is paused by pressing the Escape key, which opens the in-game menu. Construction is initiated by selecting a builder unit and clicking on a designated build site from the building menu, accessed via the B key. Unit production occurs at barracks, archery ranges, or stables, selected by pressing the corresponding number keys 1 through 4. Resource gathering is automated; peasants assigned to a resource node will collect continuously. Combat is resolved automatically based on unit statistics, with no direct control over individual attacks. Special abilities, such as healing or area-of-effect spells, are activated by selecting a hero unit and pressing the Q, W, or E keys. The minimap is displayed in the lower-right corner; left-clicking on it moves the camera to that location. The game speed is adjustable via the plus and minus keys. Multiplayer matches require a network connection and are hosted through the game’s lobby system.
