Description

Brainrot: Castle Siege! is a tower defense and resource management video game developed by independent studio Festering Keep and released in 2024 for personal computers and mobile platforms. The game is set in a medieval fantasy world afflicted by a mysterious cognitive plague known as the Brainrot, which transforms human defenders into hostile, shambling creatures. The player assumes the role of a castle steward tasked with fortifying a stronghold against waves of these infected enemies. The primary objective is to survive a set number of assault waves by constructing defensive structures, managing limited supplies of food and building materials, and deploying non-infected soldiers. The game features a pixel art aesthetic with a muted color palette dominated by grays, browns, and sickly greens. A sanity meter for the player character depletes over time and upon witnessing certain enemy types, requiring the use of rare medicinal herbs to restore it. Failure to manage sanity results in the player character becoming infected, ending the game. The game includes a campaign mode with ten distinct maps and an endless survival mode.

Instructions

Gameplay and controls are divided between a strategic overhead map view and a tactical ground-level view. In the overhead view, the player uses a mouse or touch input to select and place defensive structures such as walls, archer towers, and pitch trenches. Resources are gathered by clicking on resource nodes (stone quarries, lumber mills, and food stores) and dragging the cursor to the castle’s central keep. The player must also assign soldier units to wall segments by clicking on a soldier icon and then clicking on a designated wall section. In the ground-level view, the player directly controls a single commander unit using the WASD keys on keyboard or a virtual joystick on touchscreens. The left mouse button or a tap on the screen performs a melee attack, while the right mouse button or a long press activates a special ability, such as a healing aura or a short-range fire blast, which has a cooldown timer. The spacebar or a dedicated button on mobile pauses the game to allow for strategic planning. The inventory is accessed via the I key or an on-screen bag icon, allowing the player to equip weapons and consume items. The sanity meter is displayed as a green bar at the top of the screen; clicking on a medicinal herb in the inventory and then on the sanity bar consumes the herb and restores a portion of the meter. Enemy waves are announced by a horn sound and a text prompt at the top of the screen.
