Description
BoxBash is a physics-based competitive demolition game developed by Fission Interactive and released in 2023 for personal computers and eighth-generation consoles. The game is set within a series of enclosed, three-dimensional arenas constructed from destructible blocks. Players control a single, spherical character equipped with a limited arsenal of projectile weapons and a grappling hook. The primary objective is to eliminate opposing players by destabilizing the arena structure, causing opponents to fall into a void below, or by directly damaging their character until its integrity fails. The arenas are procedurally generated from a set of modular components, ensuring no two matches share an identical layout. BoxBash supports single-player tournaments against artificial intelligence opponents and local or online multiplayer for up to eight participants. The game’s visual style employs a minimalist, low-polygon aesthetic with a bright, saturated color palette. Sound design is limited to impact noises and structural collapse sounds, with no background music during matches. The game received a rating of E10+ from the Entertainment Software Rating Board for mild cartoon violence.
Instructions
Gameplay in BoxBash is turn-based, with each round lasting a maximum of 120 seconds. Each player’s character is a spherical avatar with a health meter displayed as a segmented ring around the sphere. Controls are mapped to a standard gamepad or keyboard and mouse. The left analog stick or W, A, S, D keys control horizontal movement. The right analog stick or mouse controls the camera and aiming reticle. The right trigger or left mouse button fires the primary weapon, a slow-moving explosive projectile that adheres to surfaces before detonating after a three-second delay. The left trigger or right mouse button activates the grappling hook, which attaches to any block surface within a 15-meter range. Holding the grapple button retracts the line, pulling the player toward the anchor point. The grapple can also be used to pull loose blocks toward the player. The face buttons or keyboard keys Q, E, R, and F correspond to secondary weapons: a short-range shockwave that pushes nearby blocks, a temporary shield that reflects projectiles, a remote detonator for placed explosives, and a self-destruct ability that creates a large blast radius at the cost of the player’s elimination. Players cannot jump; vertical movement is achieved solely through the grappling hook and by riding collapsing platforms. A match ends when only one player remains or when the timer expires, at which point the player with the highest health percentage wins.
