Description
Boomstone is a single-player and local multiplayer puzzle-action game developed by independent studio Red Dot Games and released in 2023 for Windows, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms. The game is set in a subterranean fantasy world where players control a small, round creature known as a "Boomstone." The core objective is to navigate procedurally generated caverns by strategically detonating the Boomstone itself. Each explosion propels the creature in the opposite direction, allowing it to traverse gaps, break through obstacles, and defeat hostile creatures. The game features a minimalist art style with a muted color palette, emphasizing particle effects and screen shake during explosions. The sound design relies on low-frequency rumbles and sharp percussive impacts to convey the force of each blast. Boomstone includes a campaign mode with 60 levels, a daily challenge mode, and a local versus mode for up to four players. The game does not include a narrative or character dialogue; progression is purely mechanical, with difficulty increasing through tighter corridors, moving platforms, and enemy types that require precise timing to destroy.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are based entirely on the manipulation of the Boomstone’s explosive force. The player does not directly move the character. Instead, the Boomstone is stationary until the player initiates a detonation. On keyboard and mouse, the left mouse button or spacebar triggers an explosion. On gamepad, the A button or right trigger performs the same action. On mobile, a single tap on the screen detonates the Boomstone. The direction of the explosion is determined by the position of the cursor (PC), the direction of the left analog stick (gamepad), or the swipe direction (mobile). The Boomstone explodes in a small radius, damaging enemies and breaking brittle walls within that radius. The player character is launched in the exact opposite direction of the explosion’s center. The launch distance is fixed per explosion, but the player can chain multiple detonations in mid-air to alter trajectory or extend flight. The game uses a momentum system: consecutive explosions without touching the ground increase speed and reduce the cooldown between blasts. Contact with spikes, lava, or enemy bodies results in instant failure, resetting the current room. The interface displays a simple HUD showing remaining lives, a timer for speedrun tracking, and a counter for collected gems used to unlock cosmetic skins. There is no health bar or mana system; each room is a single-attempt puzzle until the player reaches the exit portal.
