Description

Around the Core is a single-player puzzle video game developed by independent studio Fizzy Fish Games and released in 2023 for personal computers and mobile platforms. The game is set within a stylized, abstract representation of a planetary core, depicted as a rotating, multi-layered sphere composed of concentric rings. The player’s objective is to restore stability to this core by manipulating energy flows across its surface. The narrative is minimal, conveyed through brief text logs that describe a failing artificial intelligence tasked with maintaining the core’s equilibrium. The visual design employs a monochromatic palette with neon accents, emphasizing geometric patterns and particle effects. The game features a procedurally generated sequence of levels, each presenting a unique configuration of nodes and pathways. Sound design consists of ambient electronic tones that shift in pitch and tempo based on the player’s actions. The game has been noted for its increasing difficulty curve, which introduces new mechanics such as energy reflectors and timed gates after the initial stages.

Instructions

Gameplay in Around the Core is turn-based and gridless. The player controls a single cursor or touch point that selects and rotates segments of the core’s rings. Each ring is divided into arc-shaped tiles, some of which contain energy nodes. The primary action involves clicking or tapping a tile to rotate it clockwise or counterclockwise by one position. The goal is to align tiles so that energy nodes connect to form continuous pathways from the core’s center to its outer edge. A pathway is considered complete when a node on an inner ring is directly adjacent to a node on the next outer ring, creating a chain. The game provides a visual indicator: a glowing line appears between connected nodes. The player must complete a set number of pathways per level to advance. Controls are limited to a single mouse button or touch tap. On keyboard, the left and right arrow keys rotate the selected tile. The spacebar or a dedicated button on the touch interface confirms a tile selection. A level timer is displayed in the upper corner, but it does not affect scoring; it only tracks completion time. The game includes an undo function, accessible via the ‘Z’ key or a back arrow icon, which reverses the last rotation. There is no pause menu; the game can be exited at any time, and progress is saved automatically after each completed pathway.
