Description
Apocalypse Town is a single-player survival simulation game released in 2023 by independent developer Hollow Shell Studios. The game is set in a procedurally generated urban environment following a catastrophic event that has collapsed societal infrastructure. The player assumes the role of a lone survivor who must navigate the ruins of a mid-sized city, referred to as the Town, to secure resources, avoid environmental hazards, and manage physical and psychological needs. The narrative is emergent, driven entirely by the player’s actions and the dynamic state of the world. The Town is divided into distinct zones, each with varying levels of contamination, structural integrity, and hostile non-player character activity. Resources such as food, water, medical supplies, and crafting materials are finite and degrade over time. The game features a persistent day-night cycle and a weather system that directly affects visibility, temperature, and the behavior of roaming threats. There is no traditional quest system; objectives are defined by the player’s immediate survival requirements and long-term goals, such as fortifying a shelter or establishing communication with other survivors. The game ends when the player character dies permanently, with no respawn or save reloading permitted.
Instructions
Gameplay is controlled through a third-person perspective with a free-roaming camera. The player character moves using the W, A, S, and D keys. The mouse controls camera rotation and aiming. Left-click performs a primary action, such as attacking with a held weapon or interacting with an object. Right-click activates a secondary action, such as blocking or using a tool. The scroll wheel cycles through the inventory hotbar, which holds up to eight items. The inventory screen is opened with the I key, allowing for item management, crafting, and equipment changes. The Tab key displays a map of explored zones, marked with player-placed waypoints. The Shift key triggers a sprint, which drains a stamina bar displayed at the bottom of the screen. The C key initiates a crouch, reducing noise and visibility. The Spacebar performs a jump. The E key is used for contextual interactions, such as opening doors, looting containers, or activating machinery. The F key toggles a flashlight, which consumes battery power. The Q key drops the currently held item. The R key reloads firearms if ammunition is available. The M key opens a radial menu for quick actions, including bandaging wounds or consuming food. The Esc key pauses the game and opens the settings menu. Health, hunger, thirst, and sanity meters are displayed in the upper-left corner of the screen. A compass at the top of the screen indicates cardinal directions and points of interest.
