Description
Alchemist's Trial is a puzzle-adventure game released in 2023 by independent developer Hollow Forge Studios. The game is set in a fictional medieval kingdom where alchemy is the dominant science and art. The player assumes the role of a novice alchemist who must pass a series of increasingly complex trials to earn the title of Master Alchemist. The narrative is delivered through environmental storytelling and a sparse text log, focusing on the protagonist's journey through a decaying laboratory and the surrounding wilderness. The core mechanic revolves around a simulated alchemical system where the player combines base ingredients—such as herbs, minerals, and animal extracts—to create potions, catalysts, and transmuted materials. Each trial presents a specific alchemical problem, such as creating a stable light source or neutralizing a toxic gas, requiring the player to deduce the correct formula through experimentation and observation. The game features a muted color palette and a hand-drawn art style, with a minimalist user interface that displays only the inventory and a recipe notebook. The soundtrack is ambient and non-intrusive, designed to support concentration. The game has been noted for its lack of hand-holding, requiring the player to learn the properties of each ingredient through trial and error.
Instructions
The player controls the alchemist from a top-down perspective using a keyboard and mouse or a standard gamepad. Movement is mapped to the WASD keys or the left analog stick. Interaction with objects, such as gathering ingredients or activating apparatus, is performed by pressing the E key or the A button. The primary gameplay loop occurs in the alchemy station interface, accessed by pressing the Tab key or the Y button. Within this interface, the player selects ingredients from an inventory grid and drags them into a central mixing bowl. The player then selects a process—crushing, heating, or distilling—by clicking corresponding icons or pressing the number keys 1, 2, or 3. The result of the combination is displayed as a new item or a failure state, indicated by a visual effect and a sound cue. The player can consult the recipe notebook by pressing the R key or the X button, which records discovered formulas but does not provide hints for unknown ones. The game saves automatically at the start of each trial. There is no combat system; the only failure condition is the inability to complete a trial within a set number of ingredient uses, which resets the trial. The player can discard a failed mixture by pressing the Q key or the B button.
