Description
African Princesses: Style Island is a fashion-oriented simulation video game developed by the independent studio Digital Diva Games and released in 2023 for mobile platforms. The game is set on a fictional tropical archipelago known as the Style Islands, where the player assumes the role of a stylist tasked with dressing a cast of royal characters from various African-inspired kingdoms. The narrative centers on a diplomatic fashion summit, where each princess must present a unique outfit that represents her kingdom’s cultural heritage while adhering to a specific theme or event. The game features a diverse wardrobe of over 500 items, including traditional garments such as dashikis, kente cloth, gele headwraps, and beaded jewelry, alongside contemporary haute couture pieces. Each item is rendered with detailed textures and patterns, and the game includes a color-matching system that affects the final score. The environment consists of interactive locations like a beachfront runway, a palace garden, and a marketplace, each offering different lighting and background conditions that influence outfit visibility. The game does not include combat or time-based challenges; instead, it focuses on aesthetic coordination and cultural accuracy. A glossary within the game provides historical context for each garment and accessory, aiming to educate players on the significance of the designs. The soundtrack features instrumental Afrobeat and traditional drumming compositions. The game supports single-player progression through a series of levels, each culminating in a runway show where the player’s outfit is judged by non-player character critics.
Instructions
Gameplay and controls are structured around a point-and-tap interface designed for touchscreens. The player begins each level by selecting a princess from a roster of six characters, each with a distinct skin tone, hair texture, and body type. The main screen displays a dressing room with a mannequin representing the selected princess. The player interacts with the wardrobe by tapping on categories at the bottom of the screen: Headwear, Tops, Bottoms, Dresses, Footwear, Accessories, and Jewelry. Each category opens a scrollable grid of items. Tapping an item applies it to the mannequin, and a second tap removes it. The player can rotate the mannequin by swiping left or right to view the outfit from all angles. A color palette icon allows the player to adjust the hue of certain items, such as fabrics or beads, by selecting from a wheel of 24 colors. The game includes a zoom function activated by a two-finger pinch gesture to inspect details like embroidery or stitching. Once the outfit is complete, the player taps a “Runway” button to initiate the judging sequence. During the runway presentation, the camera automatically pans around the character, and the player can tap on specific parts of the outfit to trigger a close-up view. After the presentation, a score screen displays ratings out of ten for three criteria: Theme Adherence, Color Harmony, and Cultural Accuracy. The player can replay a level to improve the score. No virtual joystick or directional pad is used; all interactions are menu-based. The game saves progress automatically after each level.
